Essential System Maintenance.
Septic Tanks —
How it works: All household wastewater flows into the septic tank through an inlet pipe. Inside the tank, solid waste rises to the surface, forming a scum layer, while heavier materials settle at the bottom as sludge. As the contents naturally break down, the partially treated water (effluent) flows out through an outlet pipe into the drain field (soakage area), where it safely filters into the ground. Regular septic tank cleaning is essential to keep this process working efficiently and prevent blockages or overflow.
Grease Traps —
How it works: When wastewater enters the tank through the inlet pipe, grease and fats rise to the top, while solid waste settles at the bottom. The internal baffle walls slow the flow, allowing time for effective separation. This design ensures that the majority of oils, grease, and solids are retained within the tank’s chambers, preventing them from entering the drainage system and causing blockages. Routine tank cleaning and maintenance are vital to keep the system functioning efficiently.
Wash/Sump —
How it works: As greasy wastewater enters the grease trap through the inlet pipe, it passes through a series of internal chambers. These chambers slow the flow and allow for natural separation. Most solids and grease settle in the first chamber, while water flows onward, becoming cleaner as it moves through the system. The treated water then exits via the outlet pipe into the drainage field. This filtration process helps prevent pipe blockages, making regular grease trap cleaning essential for long-term efficiency.
